#### Description

WHAT: In this lesson, students find the zeros and maxima of quadratic functions to model the trajectory of a potential home-run ball (MP4). They also come up with the equation of an “average” home run into left field, and use that equation to explore whether some parks are friendlier towards hitters than others.

WHY: The trajectory of a baseball is a context for students to apply the skills of rewriting expressions and solving equations developed in this unit and the previous unit.

#### Description

WHAT: In this lesson, students use the formula for the area of a circle to calculate how much of a pizza is actually pizza, and how much is crust. They write linear and quadratic equations to represent the situation. Finally, they use their equations to analyze how they might make the best decision when ordering pizza (MP4).

WHY: This is a geometric context which connects ideas from many previous units and presents an opportunity to solve a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula (A-REI.B.4).
