Multiplication by Fractions
In this unit students
• multiply whole numbers and fractions by fractions;
• interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing);
• solve real world problems involving fraction multiplication.
This is the first of three units focused on major work with fractions. Students begin by revisiting their work in fourth grade with multiplying fractions by whole numbers and extends it to multiplying fractions by fractions. Developing a deep conceptual understanding of multiplication as scaling helps students to extend their thinking about fractions as numbers.
